The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly impacted the film industry over the past two years, leading studios to make movies available on streaming apps and putting theaters in danger of extinction. However, the record-breaking box office success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” this past December proves that theater-only releases are still possible, even in a pandemic, and the lineup for 2022 shows promising signs for the future of movie theaters. Here’s a look at our top 5 most anticipated films coming up this year.
5. “Thor: Love and Thunder”- July 8th, 2022
The God of Thunder is achieving something that no Avenger has done before- getting a fourth solo-movie. With Taika Waititi set to return as director, Thor fans can expect to see another heartfelt, colorful, and camp adventure. A familiar face making her return to the franchise is Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Thor’s former love interest who may have the hammer passed to her in this film. If Waititi delivers again with his signature humor and fast-pace, fans are bound to be in for one heck of a ride with this one.
4. “Jurassic World: Dominion”– June 10th, 2022
The third installment of the Jurassic World franchise is bound to deliver colossal thrills after the ending of “Fallen Kingdom” in 2018, where the dinosaurs were set loose on the real world. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are set to return for the “threequel,” and good news for fans of the original trilogy, Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum will be appearing in this movie. If “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has proven anything, it’s that nostalgia sells big in the box office.
3. “Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness”- May 6th, 2022
The first trailer for this highly anticipated film played during the post-credit scene of “Spider-man: No Way Home” back in December, and since then, the hype has not died down. Fans have been speculating what opening up the Multiverse could mean for Dr. Strange after the ending of “No Way Home”, and this movie will likely deliver answers. By teaming up with the Scarlet Witch, newcomer America Chavez, former-enemy Karl Mordo, and possibly other Marvel characters (fingers crossed for Loki and Sylvie), this movie should score big at the box office.
2. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (Part 1)- October 7th, 2022
After taking home a Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2018, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” became one of the most talked-about films of the decade. It’s stunning animation, positive messages, and stellar soundtrack led many to name it as the best Spider-Man film to date. The sequel to the groundbreaking film is split into two parts, the first of which will be released this year. Miles Morales will once again team up with Spider-Woman (A.K.A Gwen Stacey) and more Spider-variants to face a powerful villain through the multiverse (seeing a theme here, yet?)
- “The Batman”- March 4th, 2022
It’s true, Batman’s story has been told countless times onscreen, with seven actors donning the cape and mask before in live-action productions. Former vampire Robert Pattinson is next up to tackle the iconic character, in a much darker adaptation of Bruce Wayne’s double life. In this film, Batman will face two of the most iconic villains of the franchise- the Penguin and Riddler. He will also team-up with the famous Catwoman (played by Zoë Kravitz), Batman’s recurring love interest across the adaptations. The main trailer for the film dropped last October, and has since wracked up 37 million views on Youtube. Needless to say, the world may never get sick of seeing Batman on the big screen.
