The Economics/Investment club here at Perkiomen Valley has sprung back to life in recent weeks. Run by seniors Ethan Angelo, Aidan Milligan, Eddie Corcoran, and sponsored by Mr. Costello, the seemingly discontinued club has been given another chance here in the Valley.
The club, which now has over 50 members, has a goal to get everyone involved and learning more about the world of stocks and investing in a hands-on manner. To do this, all members are encouraged to join an online game on the website called MarketWatch where each player is given $100,000 of fake virtual currency to invest in whatever stocks they want in real-time based on the current prices on the market. This provides a risk-free interaction with the stock market in a competitive environment, given everyone is playing against one another in order to see who can make the most money before the end of the game.
The game on MarketWatch is far from the only thing that the club’s members are exposed to. During each meeting, which happens just about every Thursday at about 2:45 or 3 o’clock, they discuss different aspects or trends of the market and news that could affect the current prices and the outlook on the future.
The leaders of the club also prepare presentations with the hope of being able to define basic functions and definitions regarding the stock market and different buying/selling options. The meetings are fairly informal, with the members free to ask questions and jump in whenever they please about any insight they may have.
There are no set requirements or prior experience necessary to join the Economics/Investment club; all you need is the desire to learn and the time to join a laid back, relaxed community where everyone is learning together.
As of now, there have not been any in-person meetings for the club, but members are very excited to announce that within the next few weeks, they will be holding their very first in-person meeting in the library at 2:45pm, with more details to come. They encourage anyone and everyone interested to join the club and attend the meetings as well as join the MarketWatch game. All information can be found in the daily announcements, where emails to reach out to if you have any questions or concerns are provided. They look forward to continuing the learning with everyone throughout the rest of this school year!
