Thursday night’s game was bound to be a good one between the 13-4 Vikings and 12-4 Rams on PV’s senior night.
The Vikings defeated the Rams earlier in the year in a close 2-1 victory, so this game was bound to be electric. Perk Valley’s student section showed out in full force, and the Rams wanted revenge on their archrivals.
During the first half, shooting an extravagant amount of corners, PV could not put one in on Spring-Ford goalie, Ashley Della Guardia. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie and throughout the first 15 minutes of the second half, it was more of the same.
The vikings had even more corners, 10 in fact, early on in the second half and still could not score. Halfway through the second half the Rams had a fast-break and PV goalie Ashley Derrick stepped out of the net to stop the SF attack which led to a great pass into the circle by SF senior Kate Crist who found Ashley Mozi for the easy SF goal. This put the Rams in front 1-0 with under 10 to play in the second half.
The Vikings seemed as if they needed a miracle in order to beat the Rams. With under 5 to play in the second half, the 11th corner was caused by the Rams setting up a chance for the Vikings to tie the game. The corner went senior to senior as Gabrielle Muschert got it to Danielle Hamm who launched one. The ball was deflected and slid into the net for the game tying goal. The fans of the valley erupted as these fierce rivals were in for a great finish.
Tied 1-1 as the game headed into overtime, with all the momentum on the Vikings side it seemed as if the game was over, even in this 1-1 tie.
The 15 minute overtime period began with several failed breakaways from the Vikings, and then a great stop by junior goaltender Ashley Derrick on a 2-1 advantage by the Rams. The momentum from the play by Derrick, led to senior Kelly Baitinger sprinting down field to find Danielle Hamm to bury one in the back of the net for a 2-1 Vikings win in a thriller.
PV finishes the regular season in 2nd place in the Liberty Division of the PAC. Moving into PAC playoffs the Vikings look to shock the world and get past OJR in order to capture a well deserved PAC championship.
