The upcoming Oscars is host to the biggest movies of last year. The Oscars hold the yearly battle for such prestigious categories as best actor in a leading role, best director, and the largest award of the night, the best picture award, just to name a few.
This year has seen history in the category as well, seeing Black Panther as the first superhero film to take a swing at the award. Along with the best picture nomination, Black Panther has also been nominated for best original song with its “All the Stars” by Kendrick Lamar and “best original score.” Lamar who worked heavily on the soundtrack, should be credited with bringing one of the best albums of the year, boosting the film as well. Additionally, Black Panther has been nominated for best production design, costume design, sound editing, and sound mixing. An Oscar in this category would be another huge win for the Marvel titan.
A battle of the musicals is also brewing in this years awards, with Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody both up for a slew of prestigious awards. Most notable, both movies are up for the best picture award, neck and neck with the best movies of the year. Actors in both movies are also up for awards. Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali of Green Book are up for best actor in a leading role and best actor in a supporting role respectively. Not to be outdone, Rami Malek of Bohemian Rhapsody is also up for the best actor in a leading role award. These movies both hold soundtracks to be reckoned with. Green Book is home to covers and originals of legends like Frank Sinatra as well as beautiful classic piano, and with the movie set around a tour of a classic trio, no corners were cut in the music department. Bohemian Rhapsody is a tough contender to beat in this category, considering it is a movie about a band (Queen) that some consider to be the greatest of their time. The songs performed in the movie not only appeal to casual fans, but satisfy even the most die hard Queen fanatics.
All things considered, this year’s nominees give the awards the opportunity to be one of the best yet. Movies this year also seemed to take a conscious and progressive take on things like sexuality, race, and embracing and driving an ever changing society. There is a message that connects to every viewer and in every one of this year’s nominees, making it an incredibly respectable group, which will lead to a neck and neck race to the top.
